When my father died, my mother received a medical bill for $500,000.
In the midst of her grief, she was handed a document full of codes and charges that made no sense. Although they had insurance, the bill she received contained numerous billing errors. An enormous burden to sort through on top of an unbearable loss.
With my legal education and experience negotiating contracts, reading fine print, and knack for finding errors, I was able to help her. Navigating through the incorrect charges and codes, I was able to significantly reduce the bill.
Most people don't have that kind of assistance. Most people open a bill like that alone, at a kitchen table, and feel completely powerless.
Years later, I found myself helping an elderly neighbor dispute her own medical bill. Someone who had done everything right her whole life, paid into the system, and was now being handed charges she had no way to understand or challenge. She didn't have the energy to fight. She shouldn't have had to.
That's when I knew it was time to build something.
